Composite Dental Fillings

Posted .

As dental technology has advanced over the years, the options for treating different dental problems have increased to give patients more choices when it comes to addressing their needs. One such option is tooth-colored, or composite fillings.

Composite fillings are made from powdered glass and an acrylic blended into a resin. There are two distinct advantages to composite fillings. The first is that the composite bonds directly to your tooth for a good fit. The second is that composite fillings can be shaded to match the color of the rest of your tooth, so that they will be harder for other people to notice them. While they are strong, they may not be as strong as other fillings, and for that reason they are recommended for teeth that will not undergo a great deal of pressure while you are eating and chewing, and often work best for smaller cavities.

Composite fillings may take longer to apply, since the tooth needs to be kept dry during the process. The composites are applied in layers and each layer must be cured with a special light. Because they can be shaded, they will be vulnerable to stains, so it is a good idea to limit your intake of dark-colored foods and drinks.

You will need to continue to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least once day. Your dentist will need to see you for your regular cleanings and exams, and at that time, she will check your composite fillings.

If you are interested in composite fillings for your cavity, or if you have another dental need, you can make an appointment with Dr. Vera Matshkalyan. To reach Kingston Family Dental in Kingston, [state}, call 603-347-1327. We look forward to starting you down the road to a terrific smile!
