How to Properly Rinse Your Mouth

Posted .

If you have mouthwash waiting on your bathroom counter, our dentist, Dr. Vera Matshkalyan, is happy to teach you all about how to use it! Mouthwash is a beneficial tool that can help you have a top-notch smile and oral health. However, that’s only if you use the right type of mouthwash.

To help you have the best rinsing technique, she is happy to give you the tips you need, which are:

-Pour about 20 millimeters (4 teaspoons) of mouthwash into the lid of the mouthwash or into another cup.

-Empty the cup by pouring the mouthwash into your mouth.

-Close your mouth and swish the liquid for approximately 30 seconds, or for however long the instructions on the mouthwash recommends. If necessary, use a timer.

-As you swish, occasionally gargle the rinse in the back of your mouth.

-Spit the mouthwash into the sink when the time is up.

-Make sure to use ADA-approved antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash. Antibacterial mouthwash kills bacteria and helps you prevent gingivitis. Fluoride mouthwash strengthens the tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities.
